Minister visits site at GH for super specialty block

Six-storied structure to spread over 6000 sq ft at Rs. 100 crore

The proposed Rs.100 crore super specialty centre at the Annal Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital would be established as a six storied structure housing 10 medical and surgical departments spread over 6,000 square feet.

As a preliminary exercise following the Chief Minister's announcement, Health and Family Welfare Minister V.S.Vijay inspected the infrastructure and healthcare facilities at the hospital here on Sunday.

Accompanied by Animal Husbandry Minister, N.R.Sivapathi and Collector Jayashree Muralidharan, he reviewed the site for the proposed centre. Going through the blueprint of the hospital with Public Works Department engineers and health officials, he advised a few changes in the current plan. He suggested a 40 feet pathway from the main road be created to facilitate direct entrance to the new block.

The proposed 300-bed super speciality block would house 10 speciality departments in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, plastic surgery, paediatric surgery, medical and surgical gastroenterology.

Around 12 structures including the skin ward would be demolished for the establishment of the new centre, M.A.Aleem, Vice-Principal, K.A.P.Viswanatham Medical College, told The Hindu. Transplant procedures and trauma care will also get an uplift, officials confirmed.

The Minister inspected various departments including the outpatient centre, intensive care unit, haemophilia, neo natal, casualty and surgery wards. He also examined diagnostic facilities like MRI scan and x-ray units, apart from scrutinizing inpatient and outpatient registers.

C.Vamsadhara, Director of Medical Education, said the existing buildings in the hospital would also get a facelift in terms of plumbing, electricity and sewage.

The Minister also visited the K.A.P.Viswanatham Medical College and the Srirangam Government Hospital to review the development works sanctioned for the hospital.

P.Kumar, MP, R.Manoharan, T.P.Poonatchi, R.Chandrasekar and T.Indira Gandhi, MLAs, T.Mohansundaram, Joint Director, Health Services, A.Karthikeyan, Dean, K.A.P.Viswantham Government Medical College, and Chandrasekar, Medical Superintendent, accompanied the Minister.
